Review: Calendar Girls

From The Kidderminster Shuttle September 27th 2012

There was a well-deserved standing ovation for the first night of this superbly-written theatrical offering, which is brilliantly performed by the brave ladies of Kidderminster Operatic and Dramatic Society (KODS).

This is a very funny play, with laughs throughout, but there are also some poignant moments and such a moving ending that the laughter turned to tears.

Everyone surely has heard the story of the WI ladies who stripped for a calendar to raise funds for leukaemia after the much-loved and respected husband of one of their members dies of that awful disease.

I have not seen the film so apart from its publicity I had no idea what to expect but I am glad I saw this production instead of the film because the characters were so ‘real’.

Jill Parmenter, Jackie Rutland, Kathryn Knight, Pat Scully, Chloe Morton and Philippa Lacey must be congratulated on their performances and also worthy of note are Melanie Greenfield and Ian Jones, the latter hilarious as he took photos while trying not to look!

Thanks KODS for a terrific evening at the theatre.
